Most universities require all undergraduate students to take a wide range of courses outside of their majors to ensure that all students get a broad education. One frequently required course is art, and can usually be fulfilled with a courses as diverse as music appreciation or clay sculpture. Most students look for the easiest course when choosing a required course outside of their major, and many of them think that photography will be an easy A, as did I. However it is a lot more complicated than you might think, even if you have taken pictures for most of your life. Another thing you have to keep in mind is you may be required to purchase a 35mm camera for use in the course, even though most people use digital cameras, which is just another of the idiosyncrasies of academia. I would suggest you buy a used camera if you are buying it for just one course, I purchased my camera here.
